Helped me survive 2 gestational diabetic pregnancies

I can't express enough how thankful I am for stumbling upon Lily Nichols' work in gestational diabetes! Her research and advice guided me and my little ones safely through two pregnancies with gestational diabetes. The book is written in a straightforward manner that made it easy for me to grasp the science behind GD and, most importantly, how to effectively manage my blood sugar solely through diet and exercise during both pregnancies. It's worth mentioning that the dietary recommendations in this book might not align with what your OB or hospital Personally, my MFM advised me to consume significantly more carbohydrates each day. However, when checking my blood sugar, I was able to experiment with different dietary approaches and immediately see how they affected my blood sugar levels. For me, following Nichols' advice of reducing carbohydrates strategically, increasing nutrient-rich foods, while incorporating physical activity was the perfect fit.

After reading it I felt so much more at ease

I purchased *Real Food For Pregnancy* when I was trying to conceive and I found it incredibly helpful. When I was diagnosed with GD I was terrified, but remembered this author had written this book on gestational diabetes specifically. After reading it I felt so much more at ease. I have such a low tolerance for carbohydrates in this pregnancy and the NHS guidelines were telling me to pack in low fat dairy and add in MORE carbohydrates than my body could handle which was spiking my BS. So far I have stayed diet controlled, baby is measuring well, I haven't gained any weight, and I am so grateful to this book for giving me the tools to keep myself and my baby healthy.

Game-changer book for gestational diabetes

I'm really glad I found Real Food for Gestational Diabetes! When I found out I was pregnant, I already had a decent idea of how to eat to keep my blood sugar in check. But this guide was a game-changer. It gave me solid advice on how to build a diet that not only keeps blood sugar steady but also gives the most nutrition for me and the baby.

What I liked most was that it focused on what to add to my diet, not just what to avoid. It was a breath of fresh air and helped me understand better what I should be eating during pregnancy. Plus, it felt good to have my choices validated when everyone else seemed to be pushing different advice.

Following the tips in this book has really paid off. My blood sugar has stayed stable, and my doctor is pleased. Get this book ASAP! Better advice than hospital and it WORKS!

I was diagnosed with GD at 32 weeks. Got the phone call, and then they tell me I will them in almost a MONTH for my first appointment. Okay? GD is no joke, and I was so beyond frustrated that they would just leave me hanging for almost a full month after giving me a diagnosis like that and having a prescription for meter and strips sent to the pharmacy that day. Thank God for this book because I was able to start implementing the diet and blood sugar parameters immediately. Thanks to the information in it, I was able to be diet only controlled. So I get to the first meeting with the dietician and they were shocked at my numbers and that I had been tracking for 3 weeks on my own already. They then gave me their info and it was so bad. Sugar Free foods were all "freebies" so they pushed those. Except that I can't eat fake sugar because it literally makes me sick.

The carb amounts were so high that I would have absolutely been on insulin [which is FINE if you need to be, but this was entirely preventable in my case] and the guidance looked like it came from the 60s. I spoke to a family member who was a diabetic counselor and she said everything I was doing from this book was spot on with what she recommends to people and that the outdated guidelines are really bad, and not to use those. So if you get diagnosed, buy yourself this book. It will give you clear info and is MUCH better and more current than most hospitals give. Our baby was NOT gigantic like everyone kept telling me. She weighed 8 lbs and was totally normal. No blood sugar issues and mine returned completely to normal after she born. This book is absolutely worth every penny and gave me a clear plan when my hospital left me hanging.

I feel like this is not nearly as helpful as her other book and all the information in the book is available online for free.
